Club Track Edition Nissan GT-R on Sale This Summer

When Nissan announced back in April that they intended to setup a Nissan GT-R Sports Driving Club and even partner with third parties build a Nissan GT-R club spec car to compete with it it flew mostly under the radar. Until today I’m sure because the first photos of what is the Club Track Edition Nissan GT-R have been published up on GT-R authorized tuning shop Nordring’s website.

This car is a joint venture between Nissan, Nismo, NOVA Engineering and Nordring and owners, who will be able to buy these cars shortly, will become part of a Nissan sanctioned Sports Club. The idea is that these members will participate in driver training, track days and other such events.

The photos give us a glimpse at the new 20″ slicks mounted on the Rays lightweight SpecV 20″ wheels. On the inside of the Club Track Edition GT-R we can make out a stripped interior with a 4 point roll cage installed. The roll cage features removable door bars. An optional 6 point roll cage is available. To match this is a slick Bride Gardis III racing seat with a 6 point harness and a racing steering wheel. The car will also feature specially tuned Bilstein Suspension more suited to the circuit.

Hopefully we’ll get some more details shortly on this, there is an article in Best Car magazine this month with some predicted pricing, we’ll update this post when we know more on that.

3D Gran Turismo 5 Demo Game-Play Impressions

GT5 was shown off running in 3D at a special event in Tokyo last week. Gaming site 1up was on hand and provided their decidedly mixed reviews on the experience:

Gran Turismo 5 didn’t look markedly better or worse in 3D when compared to its showing at TGS last year. However, it suffered from the “pop-up book look” that many 3D images do–the game looked as if it was composed of several 2D images layered on top of each other. Movies that are filmed in 2D and brought to 3D via CGI tend to suffer from the same problem (think Clash of the Titans or Alice in Wonderland.)

Though 3D images can be hard to watch for a long period of time, GT5 was relatively easy to look at. This is thanks in large part to the game not using any strong depth of field effects. [...] All objects in GT5, regardless of location, are rendered without any post-processing blur, so no matter where we looked on the screen, we could focus easily.

Of course, the “pop-up book look” won’t be an issue for players normal televisions, but the negative points are still unfortunate given the fact that many consider Sony’s desire to publish the game in 3D as a reason for its lengthy development time.

2010 Indy 500 filled with crashes, drama [SPOILERS]

2010 Indianapolis 500 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Memorial Day weekend is always a great for racing fans. Formula 1 typically has its Grand Prix of Monaco on that Sunday, (although this year it was the Turkish GP taking the calendar slot), NASCAR has the annual Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" takes the IndyCar Series to its namesake venue, the Indianapolis Speedway for the eponymous Indianapolis 500.

The 2010 Indy 500 is billed as part of the Centennial Era races, celebrating the birth of the track in 1909 and the first 500 held in 1911. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built by Indiana businessmen Carl G. Fisher, James A. Allison, Arthur C. Newby, and Frank H. Wheeler as a testing grounds to help bolster Indiana's burgeoning automotive industry. It wasn't long before racing became the raison d'être for the facility. The original tar and gravel surface was quickly replaced by 3.2 million bricks when safety became a concern.

The first 500-mile race took place on May 30, 1911, when Ray Harroun shocked everyone, unprecedentedly going solo in his Marmon "Wasp," the rest of the field using ride-along mechanics. Harroun's car was actually considered a safety risk without that passenger, but it made up for it by introducing a major automotive safety device. The Wasp, you see, was fitted with the industry's first rearview mirror. The average speed in that first Brickyard endurance race was a stupefying 74.602 miles per hour. This year's polesitter, three-time and defending race-winner Helio Castroneves, won last year's Indy 500 at more than twice that speed, 150.318 mph.

While speeds are way up, much at Indy has remained the same. The 500 is about tradition as much as anything, and so on this Memorial Day, 33 cars once again lined up, set to challenge each other, the track, and fate - crossing the bricks 200 times to complete 500 miles around the2.5-mile-long squared oval. Follow the jump to see how the 2010 Indianapolis 500 went down in the history books.

Blitz Intercooler and Suction Kit for Nissan GT-R Now Available

We got our first look at the new Blitz intercooler all the way back in January at Tokyo AutoSalon. It’s a smart looking mild upgrade for the stock intercooler units which goes for the joined core look. That core is 260mm high 532mm wide and 100mm thick so it’s a decent step in the right direction while not being over the top and radiator airflow restricting. The big change since January is that it’s now buyable as of last week. The price hasn’t changed and it’s still set at the 260,400 yen mark.

Something we couldn’t get a look at in January though, but we’re told about, is the new Blitz Suction Kit for Nissan GT-R. These cast, polished aluminum items reduce the internal airflow resistance and improve air intake efficiency. They increase the internal diameter by 10mm on the turbo compressor side and also improve the air filter side by 10mm. They come with silicon hose joiners as standard and are priced at the 136,500 yen mark in Japan.

Mercedes’ GT5 Cross-Promotions Begin

Since we first learned that the company’s new SLS-AMG would grace GT5’s*cover, the company has been increasingly open about their affiliation with the game. First it was the showcased GT5 demo at their headquarter’s museum and dealers across Europe, but now they’re expanding use of the game as they integrate it with their international marketing efforts, as seen in Mercedes’ new Facebook game “Behind the Speed”. This simple game comes with a lucrative prize: a free copy of Gran Turismo 5 and your very own VisionRacer VR3 driving rig.

The competitions is open to everyone until July 12th, so head on over to Facebook and give it your best shot. *At the very least, perhaps it will help keep you *busy until Sony’s E3 press conference – now just a few short weeks away…

GT5 Prologue Rankings App for iPhone/Android

GTPlanet user Calcifer has been hard at work developing a unique application for the iPhone/iPod Touch and Android platforms: it lets you view the latest top 100 times posted to the GT5 Prologue in-game leader boards! This provides a quick way to check rankings without having to shuffle through Prologue’s menus, or just look at the status of your own hot laps regardless of where you are. The app is available for free on both the iTunes App Store (direct link here) and the Android Marketplace (QR code available here) – or just search the applications for “gran turismo” and you should find it quickly on either platform.

Thanks to Calcifer for all his hard work putting this together – you can reach him directly with your thoughts, ideas, or feedback here in our forums.
